What makes everyday life softer?

This autumn at GAUHAR HELSINKI is all about embracing a softer way of living.

For our interview series, What Makes Everyday Life Softer?, we invited three members of the Gauhar community to reflect on personal style, thoughtful choices and the small rituals that bring ease, meaning and softness into their everyday lives.

Discover their stories and perspectives on dressing with intention, finding beauty in the everyday and creating a life that feels truly your own.

What does a softer everyday life mean to you?

Marjo

Being present, warmth, atmospheric evenings and unhurried moments.

Katariina

To me, a softer everyday life means slowing down and allowing the day to have more breathing room. It is about enjoying cosy time indoors while still making the most of the daylight by staying active outside.

Adama

For me, softness isn't really about having less to do, but it's more about carrying what I do differently. As an entrepreneur and mom of two, my weeks are still rather busy, but inside I don't feel the busyness. A softer everyday for me is facing the daily challenges with a sense of peace and safety in my body. In my work I teach people to come back into their body before reacting to the day, and that's what a softer life means to me too: fewer moments spent stressing, more moments spent actually arriving in my own center. It's the difference between moving through a day and being moved by it.

Is there a small ritual that helps you slow down or feel more present?

Marjo

Yoga, reading a book and other forms of movement that deepen the connection between body and mind.

Katariina

As the days grow darker, lighting a candle – not only in the evening, but in the morning too – and spending more time at home help me slow down. I also love inviting friends over for something simple, such as a casual weekday dinner or a TV night. It makes everyday life feel warmer and helps me be more present.

Adama

A few conscious breaths to my belly and my favourite inner center body scan before I open my laptop in the morning. I also shake my body many times and rub my ears several times during the day, as these are one of the best somatic practices for calming the nervous system. It sounds almost too simple, but these are the same principle I teach in our Embodied Mindfulness school Mindful Academy – the body has to know it's safe before the mind can be clear. Those small pauses during the day tells my nervous system we're not in an emergency and we can get things done from a more present feeling.

What are you choosing to make more space for this season?

Marjo

Cosy time at home and good-quality sleep.

Katariina

This season, I am making more space for spontaneous plans and following my own rhythm. I am trying to listen more closely to what my body and mind need instead of filling every moment. I am also looking forward to all the little seasonal pleasures — currently, I am getting ready for everything pumpkin!

Adama

Stillness between commitments, honestly. I'm launching my first book soon, I teach weekly, lead a team of four, and have my responsibilities with my kids... So it would be easy to fill every day with just errands. Instead, I'm protecting small moments of unstructured time for myself, and I even signed up for a spa membership so that I actually take longer breaks just for myself during the week. I also believe that the work I teach only stays credible if I'm actually living it, not just writing about it.

What makes a piece of clothing feel truly right for you?

Marjo

A piece feels truly right when it is pleasing to my eye, fits beautifully and complements my personal colour palette.

Katariina

A piece of clothing feels truly right when it is comfortable, made from quality materials and makes me feel confident. I love clothes that work just as well at home as they do when going out. My favourites are classic pieces with a subtle twist, which is why I love Gauhar — the pieces tick all the boxes for me.

Adama

I love pieces that are practical, feel comfy, and make me feel confident. My astrological sun sign is Virgo, which means I also appreciate beauty and quality a lot! If something restricts my body or makes me hyperaware of how I'm sitting or standing, it pulls me out of presence. So the clothes I wear must also make my body feel safe and present. Gauhar definitely does that for me!

Complete the sentence: Everyday life feels softer when…

Marjo

…I can be completely myself, allow myself to feel and think freely, and live a life that feels true to me – surrounded by the people who matter most and doing the things I enjoy.

Katariina

…I do not rush through the day and have time for the small rituals and cosy seasonal moments that make life feel a little more special.

Adama

...I've come back to my body before I've come back to my to-do list.
